Happy New Year 2023

Posted by Lynn Woollacott on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, In : Poetry
It's been awhile since I blogged. Partly through illness and partly through Covid effects upon the household, and Col's heart bypass.  And partly through contemplating whether to delete the blog altogether because of time, other interests and ageing (degeneration and deterioration!)

I've started the New Year by updating publications etc. from last year on my writer's CV and records. In the process I managed to wipe out my laptop clean of everything on my desktop - help! I eventually got the w...

I've had a few technical difficulties for a couple of months with my blog site, which stopped me doing anything. Pleased to say it's all sorted now. Sometimes it's hard to believe I once once a science technician and in charge of all the school's computer systems. I often used to ask for help from the physics teacher who seemed to know everything back then. Now I have a wiz kid I can ask who runs his own business, pleased to say I didn't have to ring him up this time. But it's taken me awhile...

Seat How Summit Trail

Posted by Lynn Woollacott on Sunday, May 14, 2017, In : Nature Notes

From Whinlatter Visitor Centre, Keswick, Cumbria. April 26th 2017

Moss dripped on branches, hung like green wigs from trunks on thousands of standing and many fallen trees. The path also revealed cut-outs of slate rock which had little falls of pink and grey slate shingle where I searched in vain for fossils. Tree creepers and mistle-thrush teased us for a photo shoot. The steep path was wide and looking back we could see an array of brown and grey mountains intermittently lit by the sun. The ...

Happy Burn’s Night 25th January

Norwich Book Club discussed my poetry book ‘Notes From The Balcony’.

What an honour for me, who ever thought I’d be in such a position given I’m the youngest of ten children – a coal miner’s daughter. I left school at age 15 to work in a factory. I have to thank Adult Education – in schools, The Open University and the University of East Anglia, and lately on-line learning courses and of course my publishers.  I confess I love being a stude...

Poetry and Pimms
Saturday 15 August 2015

With a spectacular backdrop of the marshes at Cley and the setting sun, three of us (Julia Webb, Mathew Howard and me) recited our poetry to an appreciative audience. We centred our poems on the theme of 'nature'. Pimm's was flowing, and on a break with refreshments, we watched hares bounding and playing in the adjoining field, and a kestrel hunting. Special thanks to Rachel (of NWT Cley Marshes) for organising the event.

LOVE IS A JOURNEY

Their first meeting – the coach for Archant’s annual awards ceremony,
Mandy walked down the aisle refilling raised glasses. Hot Tottie!
cried Andrew. Squashed together colleagues in best attire fell silent.
Mandy turned, hair cascading, and she laughed.

Theirs was a long-distance romance. Distance brought planes
and trains keeping track, distance brought car journeys
on snow-cotton drifts, distance brought photo’s lighting walls
and shelves with family and friends.

Poetry Unboound

Posted by Lynn Woollacott on Saturday, March 14, 2015, In : Poetry

This poem is currently on display at the Millennium Library in Norwich. Poets can drop a poem 'in the box' or via email, if selected the poem will be put on display in the library and when taken down will be stored for folk to browse on the web page. This poem was inspired by my observations of the flamingos in the pond I frequently pass (behind a fence!) when dog walking.

Colin and I traveled to London by train early one September morning. We arrived early and spent the day exploring The British Museum and surrounding area. In the evening I read with five other Norwich based poets and friends and six Tonbridge poets at The Poetry Society Café. What a brilliant lot of poets and poems.

Wedding Poem

Their meeting began
with each becoming a familiar face
in photos of well-loved friends,

googling and facebook revealing characteristic traits,
Kev camping on Scafell, Em scaling the heights:
tents; snorkels; flip flops; cats; dogs and family.

Her aura is thousands of silver dancing stars,
his the blue of a calm Mediterranean sea.
He wanted to catch the stars, and she to sail the sea.

Their first date was to feed waddling ducks,
on the costal path in Cley-next-the-sea.
Kev favoured a ...

Our hotel was only a few minutes away from the church, we made a dash for it in pelting rain,
got my umbrella tangled in another, the man in the tangle kept running, somehow I escaped.
Ann Pilling was waiting in the church foyer with her husband, she recognised me which was nice,
Ann had organised the reading through Ronnie at Indigo Dreams Publishing, she is a widely
published author. Angela (Lock) was already inside the reading room and it was an honour

Daniel's Poem (age two years and two months)

Posted by Lynn Woollacott on Monday, October 1, 2012, In : Poetry

It’s been six days since I wrote a poem but joy comes in many forms, at six a.m.
each morning my grandson has woken me, climbed into bed and asked for my pen
and notebook to start his day, he likes my pen of many colours. I like his bold swirls
and circles, the way he draws smiles bigger than people’s heads, the way he sees
each line as something frames in his mind, this straight line is up or down and then it
curves round and zig-zags in changing colour and is superimposed with larger ci...

Unravel

Unravel those French seams,

see if there’s a selvage edge:

zig-zag of tiny holes where the loom gripped the cloth,

             the close-pressed, ruckled warp

Ignore the little cuts of buttonholes, but caress

                                       the buttons,

                                       remove them,

                                       put them in a tin

Ease out each dart, each knife- edge pleat

Unsettle sleeves, unpick pockets,

24 July 2012

Twenty four degrees centigrade, after weeks of rain, hurrah!! We parked at Morston Quay
early, with our intention of a short walk over the boardwalk for some bird/wild flower
spotting. The boardwalk was grey and glupping and we were quickly told by a boatman the tide
was rising and we were about to get cut off! We headed back to explore the information centre
and then found a seat to wait for our boat. We had close ups of bees on thistles
and distant red sails (which looked black), a...

How I wrote the poem, 'The Raggedy Men of Cromer Pier'

How I wrote the poem, ‘The Raggedy Men of Cromer Pier’

When I enquired about the very popular Cromer Ghost Walk it was full. However I was invited to tag along – being
a poet embarking on writing about local ghosts appealed to everyone!  Over time, living in Cromer makes you aware
of legends and ghosts, winter nights on the seafront can conjure all sorts of mystical and imagined apparitions.
The walk around town revealed vital missing details by Paul Greaner (the tour leader) to what I th...

Time – all day as I’m a bit slow!! (3-4 hours normally)

From the car park at Gatesgarth Farm, under grey cloud cover, a winding path
stretches into a meandering valley, on out left, Fleetwith Pike, on the ground
– wild dog violets and the sound of a splashing river. We cross a bridge to the
right side for Hay Stacks mountain and take step after boulder step up past

Nature Notes.

March 3, 2012.

Dew sparkles on the Leylandii hedge, a blackbird hops along its ridge, a length of dried grass in his beak.

March 14.

When I was in nine, (many years ago!) our headmaster brought in a road kill;  in assembly he asked
if anyone had ever seen a real badger, one child raised their hand. Later, each class in turn, had to walk past
the dead badger so we could see what one looked like. One side of the badger’s face was smashed in; his legs were
set in a running position...

Nature Notes, February 2012

26 January. East Runton to West Runton Beach (and back) – around 2 hours.

There’s a thin line of mist on the sea’s horizon as I pass the eerie moon-like landscape of chalk rocks on my left. On the strand line there’s washed up new-growth of bright green sea lettuce. Sea lettuce is packed with healthy vitamins and is grazed on by geese further up the coast in the marshes, and in the sea it’s a good food source for marine animals. I’m not tempted by it â€...

Nature Notes, January 2012

New Year's Eve.

Walking on the beach between East Runton and Cromer, I lean up against the pillbox which has been tilted by the tides, I've seen it covered in sand and fully exposed to the elements at different times of the year. In front of me is approximately 250 yards of golden sand, then 500 yards of flint rock and pools. Gulls move and stand in circles of ebbing, gentle slush. The fog freezes the ends of my fingertips.  A few dog walkers pass by without noticin...
